For commercial timber investments and large-scale reforestation, consistency is key. Our machine tree planting services utilizes specialized tractors and mechanical planters to install thousands of seedlings per day with uniform depth and spacing. It is the most efficient way to establish Loblolly and Slash pine plantations across Georgia, Alabama, and Florida.

When you are planting for timber volume, getting your trees in the ground quickly and correctly matters. Machine planting allows for higher daily production rates and deeper root placement than hand tools generally achieve. By using heavy equipment to open the soil and packing wheels to close it, we eliminate air pockets and give seedlings immediate access to soil moisture. For those interested in how mechanized planters improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness, this USFS planting machine guide provides useful context based on real operational data.
Woodland Works utilizes both V-blade planters for rougher cutovers and traditional coulter planters for converted pastures. Whether you are establishing a new stand of genetically improved Loblolly pine or replanting Slash pine in the flatwoods, our mechanized approach delivers the straight rows and consistent stocking density required for a profitable rotation.

The biggest challenge in reforesting cutover timberland is the slash and stumps left behind. While hand crews can walk over debris, machines often need a cleaner path. In many cases, this can be improved with strategic site prep, such as the work we perform through our Mechanical Site Preparation services, which help reduce debris barriers and improve planting efficiency.
However, our V-blade planters can push aside light to moderate debris, creating a clean micro-site for the seedling. This reduces the need for expensive root raking on some tracts.
We operate throughout the coastal plain and piedmont regions. From the sandy loam of South Georgia to the clay of East Alabama, matched equipment ensures that the planting furrow is opened properly and, more importantly, closed tightly. Proper compaction around the root is the single biggest factor in seedling survival during a dry spring.
A mechanical planter is pulled behind a forestry tractor (skidder or crawler). A heavy coulter wheel slices through roots and sod, followed by a foot that opens a deep trench. An operator riding in the planter places seedlings into the trench at specific intervals. Finally, heavy packing wheels angled at the rear squeeze the soil back together.
This process achieves two things that are hard to replicate by hand: consistent depth and extreme soil-to-root contact. By fracturing the soil with the subsoiling action of the foot, we also help roots spread faster in compacted fields. The result is a stand that establishes quickly and grows uniformly.
Not every acre can be machine planted. We assess slope, stump height, and debris load to determine if machinery can operate safely and effectively, or if site prep is needed first.
We set the spacing gear to match your target density (e.g., 605 trees per acre). We also adjust the packing wheel pressure based on soil moisture to prevent J-rooting or air pockets.
Our experienced operators run straight, parallel rows. This maximizes the number of trees you can fit on the tract and makes future management steps—like spraying or thinning—much easier for equipment operators.
Throughout the day, we conduct 'tug tests' and dig checks. We ensure seedlings are firmly seated and that the root systems are straight and pointing down, not swept back or curled.
The standard method for establishing commercial pine stands. We plant high-production genetics in rows that facilitate future mechanical harvesting.
Converting fields to forest. Machine planting is ideal here as it breaks up the plow pan (hardpan) under the grass, allowing tree roots to access deeper moisture immediately.
For tracts over 50 acres, machinery is the most cost-effective option. It provides the speed necessary to get thousands of seedlings in the ground while soil moisture is optimal in January and February.
It depends on the amount of debris. We can use V-blade planters to push aside light slash. However, heavy logging debris usually requires a chemical burn-down and potentially a mechanical raking pass before we can pull a planter through effectively.
On well-prepared ground, machine planting typically offers slightly higher survival rates. This is due to the packing wheels providing superior soil compaction around the roots, eliminating the air pockets that often occur with hasty hand planting.
Machine planters can handle both, but they are most commonly used with bareroot Loblolly and Slash pine. Bareroot is more economical for large acreage, and the machine handles the larger root systems of bareroot stock very well.
