Timber Stand Improvement

25+ Years of Serving Georgia, Alabama & Florida

Woodland Works executes timber stand improvement for timber companies, consulting foresters, and large landowners across Georgia, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. Timber stand improvement, or TSI, is the work that moves growth onto the trees worth keeping: crop tree release, thinning, and hardwood control that lift the value of a managed stand before harvest. We run production crews out of our base in Marion County, Georgia, and work either directly for the landowner or alongside a consulting forester's prescription.

Service Background

What Timber Stand Improvement Actually Does

(706) 525-5334Click to call

Timber stand improvement is the set of cuts and treatments that direct a stand's growth toward its highest-value trees. Every acre holds a fixed amount of light, water, and growing space. When low-value, defective, diseased, or competing stems take up that space, the trees you want to grow into sawtimber slow down. TSI removes those stems so the crop trees get the resources instead.

The work breaks down into a few core practices:

  • Crop tree release. Select the best stems in the stand, the ones with straight form, good crowns, and species value, then cut or treat the competitors crowding them. Released crop trees put on diameter faster because their crowns are no longer in competition.
  • Thinning. Reduce stand density so the remaining trees have room to grow. This includes pre-commercial thinning in young stands and density management in stands carrying too much basal area.
  • Hardwood and competition control. Remove or treat the unwanted hardwoods and brush that compete with planted pine, particularly in stands established for timber yield.

In landowner terms, the goal is fewer, better-spaced, faster-growing trees. You are trading stem count for diameter and value. A stand carrying too much basal area grows wood, but it spreads that growth across too many low-value stems. TSI concentrates it on the trees that pay at the landing.

For the related treatment on established pine, see mid-rotation release spraying, the form of TSI that frees crop pine from hardwood competition partway through the rotation.

The Problem for Timberland Owners

A stand tells you when it needs work. The signs are consistent across managed pine in the Southeast:

  • Stalled diameter growth. The stand is overstocked. Trees are tall and thin, crowns are crowded, and ring growth has slowed because there is no room to expand.
  • Hardwood competition in planted pine. Sweetgum, oaks, and other hardwoods are climbing into the canopy and shading out the pine you planted and paid to establish.
  • Suppressed crop trees. The best stems are losing the race to lower-value neighbors that happen to be taller or wider right now.
  • A stand that has not been touched since establishment. Years of growth with no intervention means growing space is going to whatever grew fastest, not to what is worth the most.
  • Low-value stems holding growing space. Defective, forked, diseased, or poorly formed trees are occupying space a crop tree could use.

The cost of doing nothing is measured in time and yield. An untreated stand carries a longer rotation, a lower sawtimber percentage at harvest, and reduced per-acre value when the timber sale closes. This is a decision about an asset, not appearance. The question is straightforward: is the stand growing the wood you can sell, or just growing wood.

If you are working toward a written management goal, our forest management plans resource covers how TSI fits into a longer-term plan for the tract.

What TSI Execution Involves

We scope each job to the stand and the goal. A typical timber stand improvement project includes:

(706) 525-5334Click to call

Stand assessment and marking

Walk the stand, read the stocking and basal area, identify crop trees and competition, and define the treatment. Marking sets what stays and what goes before any crew runs.

Crop tree release

Free the selected crop trees by cutting or treating the stems competing with their crowns. This is the work that puts diameter growth where it pays.

Pre-commercial and mid-rotation thinning

Reduce density in young stands before the timber has merchantable value, and manage density in established stands to hold growth on the best stems.

Hardwood and competition control

Mechanical removal and EPA-certified herbicide application to take out the hardwoods and brush competing with crop pine. Method depends on stand condition and goal.

Cleanup consistent with the management goal

Cut material is handled to fit the objective for the tract, if the goal is to leave it to break down or to reduce it for the next operation.

Equipment and Methods

We match the method to the stand, the terrain, and the owner's end goal. No single tool fits every tract.

(706) 525-5334Click to call

Mechanical control

Skid steers and forestry attachments for removing competing stems and brush where the ground and the prescription call for it.

Herbicide application

EPA-certified applicators using backpack and broadcast methods for selective and area treatment of hardwood and brush competition.

Hand crews

Selective work on rough, steep, or sensitive terrain where machine access is limited or precision matters more than speed.

Method selection is a silviculture decision, not a default. A clean, accessible stand may call for broadcast treatment. A mixed stand with scattered crop trees may call for selective hand or backpack work. Sensitive ground near water or on slopes changes the approach again. We pick the combination that hits the prescription without damaging the stand you are keeping.

For the herbicide-specific treatment on established pine, see chemical site prep and mid-rotation release spraying.

Mid-Rotation Release: TSI for Established Pine

How a well-timed herbicide release lifts pine growth into the final years of the rotation.

(850) 780-1631Click to call
Established pine stand after mid-rotation release with reduced hardwood competition

For established pine plantations, mid-rotation release is the form of timber stand improvement that returns the most. By the middle of a rotation, hardwood and brush competition has often worked back into the stand and started pulling resources away from the crop pine. A targeted herbicide release frees the pine from that competition partway through the rotation, when there is still enough time left for the released trees to convert the freed growing space into diameter before harvest.

The timing is the point. Release too early and the competition returns before harvest. Release too late and the trees have too few years left to respond. Done at the right stage, mid-rotation release lifts growth into the final years of the rotation, which is exactly when added diameter moves volume from pulpwood into sawtimber.

This page is the canonical home for timber stand improvement across the Woodland Works service area. For the spraying-specific detail on how a mid-rotation release is prescribed and applied, see mid-rotation release spraying.

How We Approach a Stand

We run TSI as a sequence, not a single pass.

(706) 525-5334Click to call
1

Assess the stand and define the goal

Read stocking, basal area, species mix, and stand condition. Set the objective with the owner or the consulting forester before any treatment.

2

Mark crop trees and competition

Identify the stems that stay and the stems that go, so the crew executes a plan rather than a guess.

3

Execute the release or thin with the right method

Mechanical, herbicide, hand, or a combination, matched to the stand and terrain.

4

Verify

Confirm the treatment hit the prescription and the crop trees are released.

Species drives the outcome. Loblolly is the workhorse for timber yield across the region; release and thinning concentrate growth into merchantable diameter on a timber-driven rotation. Longleaf is managed for restoration and stem quality, where the goal is well-formed trees and a healthy stand structure. In both cases the result of good TSI is the same in kind: better spacing, faster diameter growth, and a higher sawtimber percentage at rotation end.

For replanting after a harvest, see pine planting and tree planting.

Who This Is For

Timber stand improvement is a contractor service for managed timberland. We work for:

  • Timber investment owners and TIMOs managing pine acreage as a producing asset.
  • Consulting foresters who write the prescription and need a crew to execute it across client tracts.
  • Family timberland owners with established, managed pine who want the stand growing value, not just volume.

Woodland Works runs as the execution contractor. We carry out a consulting forester's prescription, or we work directly for the owner from assessment through treatment. Either way, the deliverable is the same: the stand's growth moved onto the trees worth keeping.

Federal cost-share can offset the work. Timber stand improvement and forest stand improvement practices are eligible under NRCS programs; see NRCS EQIP assistance and CRP program implementation for the program detail.

Experience and Coverage

Woodland Works is founder-operated by Brad Powell, with 25-plus years executing silviculture work across the Southeast. Herbicide treatments are applied by EPA-certified applicators. We run production-grade crews and cover Georgia, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle from our base in Buena Vista, Marion County, Georgia.

For coverage detail, see areas served in Georgia and the Buena Vista, GA service area.

Frequently Asked Questions

(706) 525-5334Click to call

What is the difference between timber stand improvement and a commercial thinning?

A commercial thinning removes merchantable trees and generates revenue from the wood taken out. Timber stand improvement targets stand value, not the sale. TSI removes low-value, defective, or competing stems, including ones with no merchantable value, so the crop trees grow faster. A thinning can be part of a TSI program, but TSI also covers crop tree release and hardwood control that a commercial thinning alone does not.

When in the rotation should I do mid-rotation release?

Partway through the rotation, while there is still enough time left for the released pine to convert the freed growing space into diameter before harvest. The right window depends on the stand's age, the competition level, and the species. We assess the stand and call the timing rather than apply a fixed rule. Too early and the competition returns; too late and the trees cannot respond.

Do you work from a consulting forester's prescription?

Yes. We execute as the contractor on a consulting forester's prescription, and we also work directly for landowners from assessment through treatment. Either path works.

What does TSI do to my timber value at harvest?

TSI concentrates growth on the highest-value crop trees, which means faster diameter growth, better spacing, and a higher percentage of sawtimber at rotation end. The result is more per-acre value at the timber sale compared with leaving the stand untreated. The gain depends on stand condition, species, and how much time is left in the rotation.

What states and counties do you cover?

Georgia, Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle. We are based in Buena Vista, Marion County, Georgia, and mobilize crews across west-central Georgia and the wider Southeast service area.
