Professional Tree Planting & Reforestation Services

V-Blade Pine Planting

25+ Years of Serving Georgia, Alabama & Florida

Woodland Works runs V-Blade pine planting out of Buena Vista, Georgia, in Marion County. V-Blade planting is a machine method for establishing pine on cutover ground: a single pass that opens the soil, sets the seedling at the right depth, and closes it back. We plant loblolly and longleaf for landowners, timber companies, and consulting foresters replanting harvested tracts across west-central Georgia and the wider GA, AL, and Florida Panhandle service area. Call (706) 525-5334.

Service Background

What V-Blade Planting Is

(706) 525-5334Click to call

A V-Blade planter is a tractor-drawn implement with a V-shaped blade that does three things in one pass. The blade opens a planting slit in the soil. A worker on the planter sets each seedling into the slit at the correct depth. Press wheels then close the soil around the roots. One pass, planted and packed.

The method matters for a few concrete reasons:

  • Consistent depth. The seedling goes in at the right depth every time, with the root collar set correctly, which is one of the biggest drivers of survival.
  • Consistent spacing. Machine planting holds spacing across the tract, so your trees-per-acre count matches the management goal instead of drifting.
  • High daily acreage. A V-Blade crew covers ground fast on suitable sites, which keeps cost per acre down on larger plantings.
  • Strong root contact. Closing and packing the soil around the roots in the same pass means good soil-to-root contact, which supports survival on suitable ground.

This is production pine establishment for ground that fits the machine. For ground that does not, the method changes; see the next section.

When V-Blade Is the Right Method (vs Hand Planting)

The method should fit the tract. We run both V-Blade machine planting and hand planting, and we pick based on the ground, not on what is easiest to mobilize.

V-Blade machine planting suits:

  • Clean, relatively flat, accessible cutover tracts
  • Sites where production volume and cost per acre matter
  • Ground that has had site prep and carries few obstacles for the planter

Hand planting suits:

  • Steep or rough terrain the machine cannot work safely
  • Wet ground, heavy stump density, or debris-loaded sites
  • Sensitive ground where precision matters more than speed

If the tract is clean and accessible, V-Blade plants it faster and at lower cost per acre. If it is steep, wet, stumpy, or sensitive, hand planting protects survival where the machine cannot run. We tell you straight which one fits your ground. For the alternative method, see hand planting and restoration.

The Contractor Execution

A V-Blade planting job with Woodland Works includes:

Site suitability check

Confirm the tract fits machine planting before the planter rolls. Terrain, access, debris, and prior site prep all factor in.

Spacing and trees-per-acre to the goal

Set the planting density to the management objective, if the tract is managed for timber yield or for restoration.

Planting depth and root-collar quality control

Keep seedlings at correct depth with the root collar set right, the single biggest field control on survival.

Loblolly and longleaf stock handling

Handle and store seedlings correctly through the planting window so the stock that goes in the ground is viable stock.

Single-pass production planting

Run the V-Blade across the suitable acreage at production rate, holding spacing and depth across the tract.

Every step ties the method back to two outcomes the owner measures: survival and stocking.

Equipment: The V-Blade Planter

The V-Blade planter is the implement that defines the method.

The V-Blade planter

A V-shaped blade pulled behind a tractor, with a planting seat and press wheels that open the slit, set the seedling, and close the soil in one pass. The tractor supplies the pull; the planter does the planting.

The V-Blade comes in after the ground is prepared. Machine planting works best on a tract that has had its site prep done, so the planter runs clean and the seedlings go into ground that is ready for them. Chemical site prep controls competing vegetation before planting; mechanical site prep handles the physical condition of the ground. See chemical site prep and mechanical site preparation for the work that precedes planting.

Density, Species, and Site

Trees per acre, species selection, and how site condition shapes the planting.

Pine seedlings planted at different densities for timber yield and restoration goals

Planting density follows the management goal. A tract managed for timber yield is planted at a different density than one managed for restoration or stem quality. We set trees per acre to the objective rather than a default, and we hold that count across the tract with machine spacing.

Species drives the decision alongside density:

  • Loblolly is the standard for timber yield across the region. It grows fast and is planted for merchantable volume on a timber-driven rotation.
  • Longleaf is planted for restoration and stem quality, where the goal is a well-formed, healthy stand rather than maximum early volume.

Site condition affects how the trees go in. Bedded ground, where the soil is formed into raised rows, plants and drains differently than flat ground, and spacing is set with that in mind. We match planting density and spacing to the species and the site so the established stand carries the stocking the goal calls for.

Serving Buena Vista and the West-Central Georgia Region

Woodland Works is based in Buena Vista, Marion County, Georgia. From that base we mobilize V-Blade planting crews across the Marion County region and the surrounding west-central Georgia counties, including Schley, Talbot, Taylor, Chattahoochee, Stewart, Webster, and Sumter, and the Columbus, Georgia area. From there our service area widens across the rest of Georgia and into Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

If you are replanting cutover within reach of Buena Vista or anywhere across the regional service area, we can scope and run the planting. The home region around Marion County is where we are closest and quickest to mobilize.

See areas served in Georgia and the Buena Vista, GA service area.

Experience and Coverage

Woodland Works is founder-operated by Brad Powell, with 25-plus years in silviculture and reforestation across the Southeast. Our crews are EPA-certified for the herbicide site prep that pairs with planting, so the prep and the planting come from one contractor. We are Georgia-based, in Buena Vista, and cover GA, AL, and the Florida Panhandle.

Frequently Asked Questions

(706) 525-5334Click to call

What is V-Blade planting and how is it different from hand planting?

V-Blade planting is a machine method. A tractor pulls a V-shaped blade that opens the soil, a worker sets the seedling at the right depth, and press wheels close the soil, all in one pass. It is fast and consistent on clean, accessible ground. Hand planting uses a crew with hand tools and suits steep, wet, stumpy, or sensitive ground where the machine cannot run. We do both and pick the one that fits the tract.

How many trees per acre do you plant?

We set trees per acre to the management goal and the species. Timber-yield plantings and restoration plantings call for different densities, and bedded ground plants differently than flat ground. We set the density to your objective rather than a default. Tell us the goal for the tract and we will set the planting density to it.

Do you plant loblolly and longleaf?

Yes. Loblolly for timber yield and longleaf for restoration and stem quality. We handle both, and we match the species, density, and spacing to your goal for the tract.

What areas around Buena Vista do you cover?

We are based in Buena Vista, in Marion County, and plant across the surrounding west-central Georgia counties, including Schley, Talbot, Taylor, Chattahoochee, Stewart, Webster, and Sumter, plus the Columbus, Georgia area. Our wider service area runs across Georgia and into Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

Do I need site prep before planting?

Most cutover tracts need site prep before planting so the planter runs clean and the seedlings go into ground that is ready. Chemical site prep controls competing vegetation and mechanical site prep handles the physical condition of the ground. We can do the prep and the planting as one contractor, or plant ground that has already been prepped.
