Commercial Pine Planting Services
Over 2 Million Trees Planted Across GA, AL, & FL
We turn seedlings into assets. Incorporating university-backed guidelines for seedling handling, root collar depth, and competition control, Woodland Works executes precision pine planting for timber investors and landowners. From V-Blade machine planting in rough cutovers to hand-planting containerized Longleaf, we secure your stand's future.

The ROI of Precision Planting
A timber stand's financial potential is defined in its first year. Extension research from UGA and Auburn consistently shows that 'J-rooting' (curled roots), shallow planting, and exposure to wind during handling can reduce timber volume by 20% or cause total failure. You cannot fertilizer your way out of a bad plant job.
Woodland Works operates as a biological asset manager. We don't just put trees in the ground; we manage the Cold Chain from the nursery to the field. By protecting root moisture and utilizing heavy packing wheels on our mechanical planters, we aim for survival rates that exceed industry standards, ensuring you have a fully stocked stand for your first thinning.

Planting Through Debris Without Raking or Burning
Reforesting a cutover tract presents obstacles: stumps, slash, and competing brush. While many contractors require you to pay for expensive raking and burning before they show up, our equipment fleet offers a more efficient solution.
We utilize forestry tractors equipped with heavy-duty V-Blades. This allows us to plow through light-to-moderate logging debris, clearing a clean 3-foot micro-site for the seedling. This method preserves topsoil that raking might remove while ensuring the planting foot maintains consistent depth for the Loblolly or Slash seedling.
Genetics & Species Selection
Choosing the right tree for your soil is critical. We assist landowners in sourcing improved genetics that match their site index:
Loblolly Pine: The workhorse of the Southeast. Ideal for good soils in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. We plant improved families for fast growth and straightness.
Slash Pine: Best suited for the flatwoods of South Georgia and Florida where water tables are higher.
Longleaf Pine: The choice for restoration and pine straw raking. We specialize in planting containerized Longleaf on sandy ridges to ensure deep taproot establishment.
Our Quality Assurance Process
1Seedling Culling & Care
Seedling Culling & Care
Following GFC guidelines, we inspect boxes for sour smells (fermentation) or mold before loading. We cull seedlings with stripped roots or weak stems. If the stock isn't viable, we don't plant it.
2Proper Root Geometry
Proper Root Geometry
We monitor for J-rooting (roots curling upward). Our machine check-valves and hand crews are calibrated to open a hole deep enough (typically 8-10 inches) for the root system to hang straight.
3Soil Compaction
Soil Compaction
Air pockets kill roots. Our heavy packing wheels exert side-pressure to seal the planting slit from the bottom up, ensuring capillary water contact immediately after planting.
4Herbaceous Weed Planning
Herbaceous Weed Planning
Planting is only Step 1. As recommended by extension services, we help plan for spring herbaceous weed control (Release Spraying) to prevent grasses from robbing moisture during the critical first growing season.
Planting Applications
Industrial Timber Reforestation
High-production machine planting for REITs and TIMOs. Focused on uniform spacing (e.g., 605 TPA) to facilitate future mechanized thinning operations.
Ag-to-Timber Conversion (Afforestation)
Converting pastures or row crops to timber. Our subsoiling coulters fracture the 'plow pan' layer often found in farm fields, allowing roots to penetrate deep into the subsoil.
Cost-Share Compliance (EQIP/CRP)
We are experienced with NRCS and FSA requirements. We ensure planting densities and species mixes meet your contract deliverables for federal reimbursement.
Frequently Asked Questions About Pine Planting
What is the optimal planting window in Georgia and Alabama?
For bareroot seedlings, the window is strictly December through February when seedlings are fully dormant. Containerized seedlings offer a slightly wider window (late October through March) due to the protected root plug, but winter planting remains best for soil moisture.
When should I order my seedlings?
Demand often exceeds supply for improved genetics. We recommend booking your seedlings by July or August for the upcoming winter planting season. We can assist in sourcing Loblolly and Longleaf stock from reputable nurseries.
Can you plant if the soil is dry?
We follow strict moisture guidelines. If the soil is too dry to pack firmly, or if we are in a severe drought, we will pause operations. Planting into dry powder ensures mortality. We wait for the rain to protect your investment.

Secure Your Planting Schedule
The winter planting window is short and crews book up fast. Contact Woodland Works today to lock in your acreage for the upcoming season.
